Frequently Asked Questions about Colon Hydrotherapy
What is colon hydrotherapy?
It is a gentle, controlled and non-invasive method to cleanse the large intestine of accumulated waste.
Filtered, warm water is used through sterile, single-use equipment to help remove residues, ease bowel movements and promote a feeling of lightness and wellbeing.
How should I prepare for a session?
There is nothing complicated you need to do, but for your comfort it is recommended to:
-
avoid very heavy meals and alcohol before your appointment,
-
avoid eating in the 3 hours prior to the session and limit fluids during the hour before,
-
if possible, prioritise vegetables, fruit and light meals the day before, and avoid foods that you know cause you a lot of gas.
If you are very constipated, I can advise you beforehand on how to prepare your body better.
What does colon hydrotherapy feel like?
Most people describe the session as tolerable and even relaxing. You may notice:
-
a sensation of filling or gentle pressure when the water enters,
-
relief when the bowel empties,
-
some movement or “gurgling” inside the abdomen, which is normal bowel activity.
The whole process is guided and monitored, adjusting the pace to your comfort.
Is it embarrassing?
It’s normal to feel a bit self-conscious at first, but:
-
the session takes place in a private treatment room,
-
your intimacy is covered at all times,
-
all equipment is sterile and single-use,
-
the approach is respectful and professional.
Your dignity is always the priority.
Is there any smell or “unpleasant surprises”?
No. Modern colon hydrotherapy equipment works with a closed system:
-
waste is evacuated in a sealed way,
-
there are no smells or splashes,
-
there are no unpleasant noises coming from the system.
From the outside, the procedure is clean and discreet.
Is it a safe treatment?
When correctly indicated and performed by trained staff, it is a safe procedure.
We control:
-
the temperature of the water,
-
the pressure,
-
the use of sterile, disposable material in each session,
-
and we review your medical history before starting.
Does it hurt?
It usually does not hurt. You may feel:
-
slight discomfort when the small tube is inserted,
-
an urge to evacuate when the water enters,
-
occasionally a mild cramping sensation (like a short-lived colic) that eases as soon as the bowel empties.
If at any point you feel uncomfortable, the intensity can be adjusted or the session stopped.
What can I expect after the session?
In general, you can continue with your normal routine afterwards. It is common to feel:
-
a sense of lightness,
-
more mental clarity,
-
some gentle tiredness or a desire to rest, in some cases.
You may experience more bowel movements over the next few hours, or, conversely, you may not need to go to the toilet for a couple of days because the bowel has been emptied. Both are usually normal variations.
Does colon hydrotherapy wash out the “good” bacteria?
Most of the important bacteria live attached to the intestinal wall, and are not easily removed by colon hydrotherapy.
By improving the environment of the intestine, the microbiota can reorganise and rebalance more easily. In some cases, it may be advisable to complement the treatment with probiotics and dietary changes.
How long does a session last?
A session usually lasts between 40 and 60 minutes.
The first visit may take a little longer because:
-
we review your medical history,
-
we answer your questions,
-
we assess whether this treatment is appropriate for you at this time.
What kind of water is used?
We use drinking water that:
-
passes through a softening and filtration system,
-
is adjusted to a temperature close to body temperature for your comfort.
Can I eat after colon hydrotherapy?
Yes, you can continue with your day as normal. We recommend:
-
avoiding foods that you know irritate you or feel too heavy,
-
avoiding alcohol immediately after the session,
-
choosing light, real foods (fruit, vegetables, easy-to-digest proteins).
How many sessions will I need and how often?
It depends on:
-
your intestinal condition,
-
your goal (chronic constipation, periodic detox, support for lifestyle changes, etc.),
-
how your body responds after the first session.
After an assessment, I will recommend whether it would be beneficial to do more sessions and how often.
Are there possible side effects or discomfort afterwards?
Although most people feel well, some may notice:
-
a slight dip in energy or mild tiredness,
-
some gas or abdominal discomfort,
-
temporary changes in appetite,
-
in the case of very frequent sessions, slight irritation in the anal area.
These effects are usually mild and short-lived. If anything worries you, you can always tell me.
Who should not receive colon hydrotherapy?
For safety reasons, colon hydrotherapy is not recommended in the following cases:
-
Cancer of the colon or gastrointestinal tract
-
Carcinoma of the rectum
-
Acute abdominal pain
-
Rectal bleeding or recent history of gastrointestinal bleeding
-
